Kim O’Donnel wears a few hats in the food world – trained chef, journalist, author, and cooking teacher. For the past 18 years, Kim has dispensed culinary advice and covered food policy at numerous publications, including the Washington Post, Civil Eats, Ecocentric, Mother Earth News and USA Today. An essay that she wrote for Civil Eats in 2013 is featured in the anthology Best Food Writing 2014; the essay, which tells the story of teaching her mother to cook, also earned second place in the 2014 M.F.K. Fisher Awards for Excellence in Culinary Writing.
The first Meatless Monday blogger on record, Kim is a known authority on the continuing trend of eating less meat for health and environmental reasons. As a first-generation Web journalist, Kim successfully married her two passions — writing and cooking — and has earned a national reputation for helping readers make sense of the myriad complicated food issues affecting Americans today and inspiring home cooks to return to the kitchen.
Kim is author of The Meat Lover’s Meatless Cookbook (Da Capo, 2010) and The Meat Lover’s Meatless Celebrations (Da Capo, 2012), which was among the Washington Post’s Top Cookbooks of 2012. She teaches classes both in her hometown of Seattle and in more far-flung locales, such as Rancho La Puerta in Mexico.
A graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education and The University of Pennsylvania, Kim is the founder of Canning Across America, a collective dedicated to the revival of preserving food. She sits on the Journalism Awards committee of the James Beard Foundation.
