Chelsea Cole is a cookbook author and food blogger from Portland, Oregon. She’s been blogging at aducksoven.com since 2010 and is passionate about introducing home cooks to the magic of sous vide cooking. Find Chelsea on all social media platforms at @aducksoven.
She started sharing recipes through A Duck’s Oven while a student at the University of Oregon (hence A Duck’s Oven – U of O’s mascot is the Ducks!). Her mission was to help college students get comfortable in the kitchen and rely a little less on boxed mac and cheese and takeout. Her mission remains the same today, but for all home cooks. Chelsea shares easy recipes to help folks get started in the kitchen, as well as sous vide recipes and tips on her website and in her beginner’s interactive guide to sous vide cooking, Sous Vide School.
Chelsea self-published her first cookbook, Everyday Sous Vide, in 2018 and her second cookbook, Sous Vide Meal Prep, in 2021. She shares her cookbook self-publishing advice and instructions in her online course, The Cookbook Lab.
She didn’t grow up loving cooking. In fact, she entered the U of O planning to become an elementary school teacher. Through college she worked at the Brain Development Lab at the University of Oregon with preschoolers and become the lab’s Behavioral Lab Manager after graduation. However, her blog deepened her love of cooking and for several years, she managed restaurants before transitioning to food marketing, working for a seafood startup, restaurant group, and small appliance company before pursuing food blogging and freelance recipe development full time.
Chelsea is married to her high school sweetheart who also attended the University of Oregon, so he’s been along for the whole journey (and has gotten to reap the tasty benefits!). Though she prefers to be the only cook in the kitchen, he keeps her entertained and her wine glass full.
In her free time, you’ll find Chelsea at a Timbers soccer game, in a local taproom or restaurant, camping across Oregon, thinking up new ways to prepare the fish and game her husband, brother, and dad bring home, or spending time with her family on Sauvie Island in Portland.
